A Journey Through Cirencester: Discovering the Heart of the Cotswolds

I recently found myself in the beautiful town of Cirencester, the unofficial capital of the Cotswolds, while on a house-sitting adventure. This charming town offers so much history, from its connection to an Earl whose family inspired the name of the Australian town, Bathurst, to its Roman roots when it was called Corinium.

I stayed in a cozy house with a little cat, and we even had milk delivered in bottles – how quaint! Cirencester has regular markets, and I enjoyed wandering through them, meeting stallholders, and trying out the delicious local food. The Corinium Museum was a highlight, displaying artifacts from the Roman period, including mosaics.

One of the best experiences was climbing the tower of the stunning Cirencester Church. The views over the town and the surrounding countryside were breathtaking, and I even spotted the tallest yew hedge in the world at Lord Bathurst’s estate! I wish I had my van already – it would’ve made getting around so much easier.

This town is a hidden gem in the Cotswolds, full of history, beauty, and a few surprises along the way. If you ever get the chance to visit, I promise Cirencester won’t disappoint!
