Starlink: The Gift That Keeps on Giving (…and Taking 🙃)

Why am I bringing another Starlink box into the van?

Because the first one died.
And getting it fixed was… not the smooth, seamless, “future of internet” experience I was hoping for.

If you’ve been thinking about installing Starlink in your van, this one’s for you. This isn’t an unboxing. It’s a real-life update after two months of frustration, unexpected costs, power dramas, replacement chaos, and a DHL scavenger hunt.

Let me tell you what actually happened.

Why I Bought Starlink in the First Place

When I came over to do van life properly and make videos, the eSIM/internet juggle was driving me mad.

Uploading.
Editing.
Research.
Maps.
Client work.

So I bit the bullet and bought Starlink. It was expensive upfront and expensive monthly — but I justified it because:

  • I could roam with it.
  • I could (theoretically) use it while driving.
  • I’d finally have reliable, fast internet anywhere.

The plan? Mount it permanently to the roof and stop thinking about signal ever again.

The reality? Slightly different.

Problem #1: The Price Hike

Within the first week of turning it on, my monthly fee jumped by $20 AUD.

When you’re already paying around $170 AUD a month… that’s not small change.

Not thrilled, but fine. If it works, it’s worth it.

Problem #2: It Absolutely Destroyed My Power System

This was the big one.

Starlink draws a lot of power. A lot.

By the time it powered up (which takes 6–7 minutes), I was getting maybe 5–10 minutes of usable internet before my batteries were flat.

Flat.

I had two leisure batteries. I assumed I had one — turns out I had two — but either way, they weren’t coping. They were also at end of life, which didn’t help.

Running:

  • Starlink
  • My laptop
  • Charging gear

It just wasn’t sustainable.

Cue panic.

The Van Heroes: North View Customs

Shoutout to North View Customs & Auto Glazing — honestly lifesavers.

They:

  • Tested my battery system
  • Confirmed both leisure batteries were end-of-life
  • Replaced them
  • Added extra 12V charging points (so I didn’t have to run everything through the inverter)
  • Converted the Starlink to 12V
  • Installed the dish permanently on the roof

Professional. Fast. Patient. Absolute legends.

For a moment… it looked like everything was sorted.

Problem #3: It Still Wouldn’t Work

Brand new batteries.
Professional install.
12V conversion.
Roof-mounted dish.

And I couldn’t get online.

The router light was fading in and out — nothing helpful in troubleshooting. The app sends you in circles. Logging a support ticket feels like an escape room.

Eventually I get a message:

“We’ve identified a fault. Return the whole unit.”

Return it.
Wait.
Then they’ll send a replacement.

No thank you.

After pushing through support, I finally got a replacement dispatched.

The DHL Adventure

Returning the broken unit was its own mini-series.

  • Sent to the wrong industrial estate entrance.
  • Locked barrier.
  • No visible DHL office.
  • Sent to WHSmith.
  • WHSmith couldn’t print the label.
  • Sent to the library.
  • Back to WHSmith.
  • Finally processed.

The box was returned.

It should not be this hard.

The Replacement… Is It New Though?

When the replacement arrived, a few things were… interesting.

  • No factory corner packaging.
  • Items packed differently.
  • Dust on the unit.

They said it was new.

I’m not convinced.

But at this point?
It works.

And sometimes in van life, that’s enough.

The Honest Verdict After Two Months

Right now?

It’s working.

But the experience has been:

  • Expensive
  • Power-hungry
  • Logistically painful
  • Support-heavy
  • Not remotely plug-and-play in a van

If you’re running an older battery system, assume you’ll need upgrades. Budget for it.

If you rely on power for work like I do, make sure your electrical setup can genuinely handle the load.

Because Starlink doesn’t just cost the monthly fee. It costs infrastructure.

Would I Recommend It?

If:

  • You have a solid lithium setup
  • Plenty of solar
  • Proper 12V conversion
  • Backup charging options

Maybe.

If you’re running tired leisure batteries and hoping for magic?
It will eat your system alive.
