If you think all of Germany’s medieval towns were lost to history—or worse, Hitler—you need to see Rothenburg ob der Tauber. This little gem survived intact from the Middle Ages to today, and it’s a treasure trove of cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, and historical chaos. Here’s my whirlwind guide to exploring this town, with some of my favorite stories along the way.
Park Smart, Walk Far
Hot tip: park near the swimming pool for free and then walk about 15 minutes to the main gate. This is the perfect entry point to Rothenburg’s Old Town, one of the highlights of Germany’s Romantic Road. Founded in 1170, the town still boasts medieval fortification walls built in the 13th century—and yes, you can walk them.
Why Rothenburg Survived
Here’s the first incredible story: when the plague hit, it wiped out so many people that Rothenburg basically lost all its power. No one was around to redevelop or modernize the town—but since it was built so well, it also didn’t fall apart. Result: a perfectly preserved medieval time capsule.

Climbing Towers and Charity Shops
I couldn’t resist climbing the town’s walls. Up top, the views were phenomenal—but what I found on the way down made me smile even more: a tiny charity shop tucked away in a back street, full of oddities and treasures.
And speaking of treasures, wandering the side streets led me to some traditional costumes. Expensive? Yes. Incredible quality? Absolutely. Christmas vibes? Oh yes—Rothenburg is basically Christmas year-round.
Christmas Chaos
I may have gone a little overboard with Christmas stores. I found one that was like IKEA meets a winter wonderland—but got lost trying to leave. Then there was another store I was too scared to enter. If anyone in my family reads this: yes, that counts as bravery.
Snowballs: Fried Pastry Heaven
If Rothenburg has one must-try snack, it’s the snowball. Deep-fried, sugar-coated, sometimes chocolate-flavored, these pastries are utterly ridiculous and utterly delicious. A chaotic, tasty tradition that I fully endorse.
Bratwurst and Breakfast Chaos
After indulging in pastries, I stumbled into a restaurant for some real German fuel: bratwurst and potatoes. First German sausage of the trip? Check. Minimal salad? Also check. Totally satisfying? Absolutely.
How Rothenburg Survived WWII
Here’s the second incredible story. During World War II, many German towns were destroyed. Rothenburg, however, was so beautiful that it caught everyone’s attention:
- Hitler wanted it defended to the last man.
- The US Army recognized its historical value and sent six soldiers with a white flag.
- They told the German commander: “Three hours until bombs. Don’t defend it, and we won’t destroy it.”
- The commander agreed—and the town was saved.
So when you wander Rothenburg today, you’re walking through original medieval streets untouched by bombs.
Rothenburg is chaotic, charming, and utterly magical—a must-see if you love history, Christmas vibes, or just want to eat ridiculous fried pastries while wandering cobblestones.
