Van Life Adventures: Whiskey, Castles, and Roman Walls

Sometimes a trip starts with no plan at all… and ends up being unforgettable. Beck and I set out for a few weeks of van life across the UK, chasing whiskey, castles, and epic views. Things got wild fast.

Jet Lag, Castles, and Coffee

Our adventure kicked off with a quick hop back to Australia and then straight into London. Beck needed a break, I needed to escape, and so began our three-week journey in Kenny the Camper.

First stop: Windsor, where the proper castle looms impressively over the town. Jet lag made us a little giddy, but we also made time for coffee (Black Sheep Coffee, naturally) and a quirky detour to Queen Charlotte Street, England’s shortest street.

Royal Ascot & Leicester Cheese

While driving through the English countryside, we couldn’t resist Royal Ascot on an autumn Saturday — a race day and beer festival rolled into one.

Next up: Leicester, where we tried the local Red Leicester cheese among grazing sheep, right on the edge of Sherwood Forest, brimming with legends, heartbreak, and ghost stories.

Haunted Houses & Byron’s Romance

We followed a “crazy” lead into a haunted 12th-century church near Annesley Hall. Its stories are a mix of romance and tragedy: poet Lord Byron once fell hopelessly in love with Mary Chaworth here, only to have his affections go unrequited.

And yes — the house nearby is reportedly one of England’s most haunted places, complete with TV investigations and ghostly sightings. Nick, one of its famous specters, even has photographic evidence circulating among ghost hunters. Spine-tingling, heartwarming, and historically fascinating — all in one stop.

Hadrien’s Wall: A Roman Legacy

Next, we hit Hadrian’s Wall, the 2,000-year-old northern boundary of the Roman Empire. Built on the orders of Emperor Hadrian in 122 AD, the wall stretches coast to coast and is dotted with forts and mile castles. Mile Castle 37 impressed us with its tiny stone gateways, remnants of a garrison keeping watch over Roman Britain.

Walking along the wall, surrounded by stunning countryside, I felt the weight of history — and the joy of van life freedom. Lunch was enjoyed with radishes, crème fraîche, and a view that demanded we pause our phones and just soak it all in.

Van Life Chaos: Party Mix & Random Radio

Back in Kenny, the chaos continued. Beck’s Scottish party mix filled the van, the radio seemed possessed (turning up randomly on its own), and we navigated winding roads with no hands at times. Pure joy. Pure Scotland.
