Gap Year at 54

I’ve just taken the plunge! After a chat with my boss about taking some time off, I was approved to take a whole year away to travel across Europe in a van. I’m so excited but, to be honest, also a bit terrified! This dream is finally becoming real, and now the adventure begins.

The first big step was buying a van in Europe. I’ll be picking it up in the Netherlands soon, and then the journey will start. It’s both exhilarating and daunting, not knowing where I’ll go next – left or right, who knows? There’s so much to do before I leave: from packing up my house and clearing out belongings to organizing all my health appointments. I’ve even found a place for my two rescue kittens, which was a big relief!

One of the surprising challenges was sorting out practicalities. I needed new glasses, so I headed to the optometrist, and wow, the cost was a shock! But I keep reminding myself that these are necessary steps to make this journey a reality. Preparing for this gap year also means saying goodbye to my trusty van that’s been with me for years. It’s bittersweet but knowing it’s going to a good friend makes it easier.

In the midst of all this chaos, my work colleagues surprised me with a beautiful farewell party, complete with thoughtful gifts and my favorite Italian food. It’s moments like these that remind me how lucky I am to have this opportunity.

Now, with just a few sleeps to go, I’m packing up my life and getting ready to hit the road. It’s going to be an adventure, and I can’t wait to share every step with you!
