I thought I was doing a simple upgrade.
You know… rip out the ugly ceiling, put in something nice, maybe feel mildly accomplished by lunchtime.
Instead, I opened up the roof of my bus and discovered wiring chaos, mystery materials… and something that might actually be flammable.
So yeah. That escalated quickly.

The “Simple Job” That Wasn’t
This all started because I hated my ceiling.
Bad lighting. Ugly panels. Zero vibes.
I had a vision:
👉 Timber-look acoustic panels
👉 Warm LED strip lighting
👉 Tiny house glow-up energy
The Moment You Know You’ve Made a Mistake
The first few panels came down easily.
Which is always suspicious. Lulled into a false sense of security
Because in van life (and honestly, life in general), when something starts easy…
it usually means something worse is coming.
And sure enough—
Behind the ceiling was:
- Random wiring that didn’t make sense
- Old speakers I don’t need
- Components that may or may not still do anything
At one point I genuinely found myself asking:
👉 “What here is most likely to electrocute me?”
Not a question you want to be asking in your own home.
Renovation Reality: Once You Start…
There’s a point in every build where you realise:
You’re not doing a small job anymore.
You’re doing a project.
Suddenly:
- The ceiling is half gone
- The lights are disconnected
- There are screws and panels everywhere
And you’re standing there thinking…
“Well… I live here.”
The Upgrade Vision (Because There Is One)
Despite the chaos, I do actually have a plan.
The new ceiling is going to use:
- Acoustic timber panels
- Warm, dotless LED strip lighting
- Dimmable lighting (because we’re fancy now)
And honestly?
It’s going to look so good when it’s done.
👉 This is the part of van builds no one talks about enough:
You have to destroy things before they get better.
The Real Issue No One Warns You About
Here’s where things got serious.
Before I can install anything new…
I need to figure out what’s already in the ceiling.
And that’s where things get murky.
Because the insulation (or whatever it is) sparked a lot of questions:
- Is it actually insulation?
- Is it just sound deadening?
- Does it even work?
- And most importantly…
👉 Is it flammable?
Why This Actually Matters
This isn’t just about aesthetics anymore.
If I get this wrong, I’m not just dealing with:
- A dodgy ceiling
- Or bad insulation
I could be building a fire risk into my home.
And when your home is a bus…
that’s not a small problem.
What I’m Learning (That Might Help You)
If you’re building or renovating a van or bus, here’s what this experience is teaching me:
1. Assume nothing
Just because something is already installed doesn’t mean it’s correct—or safe.
2. Old builds hide surprises
You won’t see the real condition of things until you open them up.
3. “Quick upgrades” rarely exist
Everything is connected to something else.
4. Safety decisions matter more than aesthetics
No matter how good something will look—it’s not worth it if it’s unsafe.
What Happens Next
Before I go any further, I need answers.
So the next step?
👉 I’m going to test the material and find out exactly what I’m dealing with.
(Yes… this may involve setting it on fire. Stay tuned.)

💬 Quick question for you
If you’ve done a van or bus build:
👉 What insulation did you use—and would you use it again?
