I Tried to Replace My Bus Ceiling… and Created a Fire Hazard 😬

I Tried to Replace My Bus Ceiling… and Created a Fire Hazard 😬

Some projects in van life are supposed to be simple.

This was meant to be one of them.

Instead… I may have uncovered something that could actually burn the bus down.

So yeah. That escalated quickly.

You can see the full chaos unfold here:

It Started With “I’ll Just Replace the Ceiling…”

You know that dangerous little sentence:

“This shouldn’t take long.”

That’s where this began.

The plan was simple:

  • Remove the old, ugly ceiling
  • Replace it with something nicer
  • Maybe even make it look ✨intentional✨

What actually happened…

Was the start of a full-blown teardown.

The Moment It All Went Wrong

As soon as the panels started coming down, things stopped making sense.

There was:

  • Wiring going nowhere
  • Random components doing… something?
  • And insulation that may or may not be safe

At one point I genuinely had to ask:
👉 “What here is most likely to electrocute me?”

Which is never a great sign.

This Is Where It Became a Problem

The deeper I went, the worse it got.

What started as cosmetic quickly turned into:

  • Electrical questions
  • Structural questions
  • Safety concerns

And then the big one:

👉 Is this insulation actually flammable?

Because if it is…
I’m basically building a very stylish fire hazard.

🚐 Before You Start Your Own Build…

I’ve made a LOT of mistakes doing this bus build.
(Some funny. Some expensive. One potentially flammable 😬)

So I put together a free guide:

It’ll save you time, money… and a few “what have I done?” moments.

The Plan (aka Controlled Chaos)

Instead of pretending it’s fine (tempting), I’m doing this properly.

Next step:

  • Test the insulation
  • Work out what’s safe
  • Rebuild from there

I’ve also picked up:

  • Acoustic panels
  • LED strip lighting

And if this all works…
👉 it’s going to look very good

What I’m Learning (So You Don’t Have To)

If you’re building or renovating a van/bus, here’s the real takeaway:

  • There is no such thing as a “quick fix”
  • Always question what’s already installed
  • Safety beats aesthetics every time

And most importantly:

👉 If something might be dangerous… don’t ignore it

What Happens Next

Next step is testing the insulation (slightly nervous about this one).

So if you want to see whether I:

  • Fix it properly
  • Or accidentally confirm it’s a terrible idea

👉 make sure you stick around

Final Thoughts

Van life is not always:

  • Aesthetic
  • Peaceful
  • Or Instagram-worthy

Sometimes it’s:

  • Pulling your ceiling apart
  • Questioning your decisions
  • And discovering potential fire hazards

But honestly…

Wouldn’t have it any other way.
